Kaunis Iron is evaluating several paths to strengthen the long-term stability and future potential of its operations. “By testing the alternatives step by step, we are strengthening Kaunis Iron’s ability to run long-term, sustainable mining operations in Tornedalen,” says Hans Djurberg, Head of Sustainability.
The company is carrying out extensive strategic work to secure long-term sustainable operations in Tornedalen. A key question is whether the mine should continue as it does today or take a new direction with other products and alternative routes to market. The work is divided into several tracks to provide a complete picture.
It includes, among other things, extended operations at Tapuli, project plans for Sahavaara and Palotieva, decisions on the future product range, and logistics solutions. Together, these parts are to identify possible paths forward and form the basis for well-founded decisions – provided that the necessary environmental permits are obtained.
In the review of alternative logistics set-ups, the following are being considered:
-
heavier and electrified trucks
-
rail solutions
-
a possible pipeline between Kaunisvaara and Pitkäjärvi
Djurberg emphasises that a pipeline could provide more efficient transport and reduce heavy traffic on the roads, but that it is an extensive project requiring permits and large investments – which is why it is part of the process, not a decision that has been made.
The aim is to have a clear direction around the turn of the year.
