Megacars with control over the entire value chain
Koenigsegg positions itself in the segment for so-called megacars, a category the company itself has defined as vehicles with at least one megawatt (1,341 horsepower) of power. The business model is based on manufacturing a limited number of cars per year while controlling the entire value chain, from powertrain and chassis development to final assembly. The company develops and produces most of its core systems in-house, including engines, transmissions, carbon-fibre structures and electric motors, which serves as a barrier to entry and enables the pricing position required by the segment.
Dealers, scarcity and licensing revenue
Sales take place through a global network of selected dealers, with an emphasis on the Middle East, North America and Europe. Each model is produced in limited numbers, creating natural scarcity and high resale values. The company generates supplementary revenue through its subsidiary Freevalve AB, which licenses its camshaft-free engine system to external parties, as well as through sales of internally developed components for electric powertrains.
Growth through capacity and a broader model range
Koenigsegg grows organically without acquisitions. Production capacity has been expanded through the newly established Gripen Ateljé facility, which enables the parallel production of several model programmes and supports a target of 150 to 200 cars per year. The model range is being broadened through the four-seater Gemera, which targets a broader price segment than the company's two-seater models. The supplementary revenue streams from technology licensing and component sales also form part of the growth strategy, with the ambition of scaling them beyond the company's own vehicle production.
