Strong news for Kaunis Iron - and an important signal for the future
The Land and Environment Court of Appeal has now given Kaunis Iron the go-ahead to continue and expand its mining operations in the Torne Valley - a crucial step for the company's long-term expansion. The ruling covers both the current open pit mine in Tapuli and future deposits in Sahavaara and Palotieva.
What does this mean for the company?

The ore in the current mine is expected to run out as early as 2027 - making it urgent to get the new deposits up and running to avoid production stops. The announcement has been welcomed by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and the County Administrative Board, while Sami communities and environmental organizations have previously objected. However, the court considers that increased truck transportation, for example, does not have a sufficiently negative impact to prevent the permit.
